With the unveiling of three models, Chevrolet had plenty going on at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, and none of them happened to be this. For those that don’t know, the mighty Corvette is turning 60 years old, and will celebrate the occasion by offering a 60th Anniversary Package on all 2013 models. It will go great with the Centennial Edition model parked in Jay Leno’s garage. But if he’s going to buy the 60th Anniversary Corvette, he’s gotta make sure it’s featured on the limited edition Corvette 427 Convertible.
Judging by the numerical designation, you probably already guessed what makes the Corvette 427 Convertible special: a thunderous naturally aspirated LS7 V8 engine as seen in the the Z06. That gives the 427 Convertible 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful Corvette convertible ever. Race on Sunday, sell on Monday. Since 2007, Chevrolet has consecutively used the Impala moniker to represent the brand in NASCAR. Over the same period of time, the Impala has dominated the series, taking the checkered flag 79 times. Chevrolet drivers have also won five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturers’ Championships, and Jimmie Johnson (4) and Tony Stewart (1) have collected five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver’s championships in the Impala. However, change is on the horizon, and Chevrolet has officially announced that it will retire the Impala name from NASCAR by the 2013 season. In its place will be a new nameplate, that will run alongside an all-new production model in the Chevrolet lineup.
Chevy will also be taking advantage of the new NASCAR rules, which allow manufacturers to display more of their brand identity in their racecars, the new Chevrolet racecar will closely resemble the production version. When the all-new Chevrolet Malibu launched this year, it was available in only the Eco package. This meant that consumers could only purchase the 37 mpg highway eAssist-equipped model, with a $25,995 starting price.
As the summer approaches, however, buyers will have two fresh engine options to choose from in the Malibu as it introduces a pair of all-new powertrains. First is the 2.5L Ecotec engine, which has been rated at an SAE-certified 197 horsepower (147 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. of torque (259 Nm). Chevy claims it’s the most powerful naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine in the segment, but hasn’t announced a fuel economy rating just yet. Regardless, the 2.5L will be the base engine for the new ‘Bu, and is expected to shave a couple grand off the car’s base price, making the all-new midsized sedan more accessible.

Those interested in a 2012 Chevrolet Volt will be pleased to know that a low-emission variant will begin selling in California. The modifications will allow the Volt to be eligible for the state’s High Occupancy Vehicle lane usage, and owners will be eligible for an extra $1,500 worth of rebates from California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project.
The Volt also had to receive minor powertrain changes in order to qualify. Specifically, engineers installed a “secondary air-injection pump that streams ambient air into the exhaust stream to increase the ability of the catalytic converter to remove pollutants.” The new feature is appropriately named the Low Emissions Package and will be offered on the 2012 model. The Volt’s Low Emissions Package will be standard for California.
